“It was a slugfest for sure,” Gladwin coach Mike Verellen said. “Tonight’s game lived up to the saying that the officials let the players play. Our guys had great composure, though, and handled the adversity well.
“It’s hard to rattle this team. They’re a group with a lot of experience and resilience.”
Gladwin (6-1, 5-1) led 24-18 at the half and extended the margin to 42-30 through three quarters. Standish-Sterling (6-4, 4-2) drew within seven points late in the fourth only to see Brody Verellen counter with a decisive 3-pointer at the other end for Gladwin.

Playing on back-to-back days had one benefit for Bay City Western.
The Warriors only needed to stew about a tough loss for 24 hours.
Determined not to drop two games in two days, Western came out strong and outbattled Standish-Sterling 79-68 in a non-league showdown.
“After a loss last night, we asked the guys to respond,” Western coach Will Williams said. “Down our leading scorer, Nolan Kochany responded and was the spark we needed.”
Kochany stepped up in a big way, drilling four of Western’s six first-quarter 3-pointers en route to a 20-14 lead it never relinquished. Kochany finished with 20 points and Preston Kolm poured in 19 – sinking six 3-pointers – as the Warriors prevailed with top scorer Zay Hardwick out with illness.

“Every time we made a run, Western hit a big shot,” Standish coach Matt Koin said. “They shot very well.”

GIRLS BKB: STANDISH 45, BULLOCK CREEK 40

Noah Gratopp isn’t one of Standish-Sterling’s big scorers.
But he’s one of the team’s clutch scorers.
The senior stepped to the free throw line and coolly sank two free throws with 21 seconds to play, turning a one-point deficit into a one-point lead in Standish-Sterling’s 66-63 victory over Essexville Garber.
“Noah doesn’t usually go to the free-throw line a lot,” Standish coach Matt Koin said. “But he made the two biggest free throws of his career so far.”
When Standish-Sterling made a steal on Garber’s final possession, it sealed the victory in a game of massive momentum swings. The Panthers stormed to a 22-13 first-quarter lead and were up 36-28 at the half. But Garber turned the tide with a 21-10 spree in the third quarter, taking a 49-46 edge into the final stanza.
Landon Nixon, who was already having a big game, stepped it up a notch and pumped in 15 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter. Nixon finished with seven 3-pointers in the contest. Karter Fegan also came up big with a 20-point performance for the Panthers.
But it was Gratopp who loomed largest when it counted most. The senior sank 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch, including the two that gave Standish (5-2) the lead in the closing seconds.
“I’m proud of how we responded in the fourth after losing the lead,” said Koin after his team’s fifth straight win.
