REED CITY 52, STANDISH-STERLING 15
Standish-Sterling closed out a challenging campaign with another tough setback, falling to Reed City 52-15.
The Panthers (1-8) trailed 38-0 by halftime in the non-league tilt.
Rylee Blanchard and Noah Gratopp scoring rushing touchdowns in the second half for Standish. Joel Bellor passed for 80 yards and Malachi Schaenzer rushed for 61 yards on four carries.
Best of Luck today to Coach Schalk and all of the SSC Runners at Regionals!
STANDISH, MI – Near the tail end of a winless season, Noah Gratopp was still working his butt off to get a win.
And his Standish-Sterling teammates let him know – in the best way possible – that they appreciated that.
With a chance to salt away their first victory in the closing moments of Week 8, the Panthers knew who should do the honor.
“Our quarterback, Joel Bellor, came over and said ‘Hey, Coach, can we get Noah his first touchdown?’ I said ‘That sounds good’ and sent in a play out of the (I-formation),” Standish coach Marty Malcolm said. “Everybody in the huddle knew who was getting the ball, and they all pulled together to get a senior into the end zone.”
Gratopp’s 3-yard touchdown run with 1:18 to play cemented a 21-8 victory over Pinconning and halted Standish-Sterling’s stretch of struggles. It also propelled Gratopp to MLive Bay City Player of the Week honors.
He drew 43.0 percent of the 15,834 ballots cast in the online poll, topping the strong showings of support for John Glenn’s Marcus Joshua, Clare’s Dylan Kruskamp and Mio’s Landyn Fritz.
That added to an already memorable week for Gratopp, a two-year starter on defense who hadn’t had a notable role on offense until recent weeks. That’s when Malcolm pitched the idea of stepping in at fullback to the 6-foot, 185-pound senior.
“He stepped right in and cherished that role,” Malcolm said. “He likes to go up in there and lead block for Rylee Blanchard and Jay Roper. I wish we would have done this the first part of the year.”
Gratopp carried the ball just twice in the win, but one went for an 11-yard gain and a first down and the second took him into the end zone – and got the Panthers off their season-long schneid.
“He’s been a rah-rah guy for us the last few weeks,” Malcolm said. “He’s one of the seniors who was saying ‘We’ve got to finish strong. We’ve got to get a win, guys.’ He knew that playing Pinconning, it was a game we needed to win.”
Gratopp, who shifted from defensive end to defensive tackle this season, also delivered a solid game on that side of the ball. He registered six tackles as the Standish-Sterling defense rose to the occasion.
“With his speed and quickness, he raises heck with offensive linemen,” Malcolm said.
It also helped get him his first touchdown and the Panthers their first win of the year.
Congratulations Coach Wade!
