SOCCER: STANDISH TURNS AWAY PINCONNING

Pinconning played like a vastly improved team but couldn’t hold off Standish-Sterling forever.

Standish-Sterling scored once in the first half then sealed the deal with two late goals for a 3-0 win over the Spartans, who they downed by a six-goal margin earlier in the season.

The Panthers (9-2, 6-1) remain in a tie for first with Ogemaw Heights in the Jack Pine Conference. Keeper Lucas Verdusco and center backs Ian Eman and Jacek Barwinski led the way to the team’s seventh shutout of the season.

Barwinski, Ben Briggs and Arthur Vieira Carvalho each scored a goal in the win while Carson Koin delivered three assists.

Pinconning (4-8, 3-4) shined defensively, fronted by Ryan Kowalczyk, Trevin Billingsley, Remi Merithew and Landon Cooley.
