BOYS BKB: BAY CITY WESTERN 79, STANDISH 68
Playing on back-to-back days had one benefit for Bay City Western.
The Warriors only needed to stew about a tough loss for 24 hours.
Determined not to drop two games in two days, Western came out strong and outbattled Standish-Sterling 79-68 in a non-league showdown.
“After a loss last night, we asked the guys to respond,” Western coach Will Williams said. “Down our leading scorer, Nolan Kochany responded and was the spark we needed.”
Kochany stepped up in a big way, drilling four of Western’s six first-quarter 3-pointers en route to a 20-14 lead it never relinquished. Kochany finished with 20 points and Preston Kolm poured in 19 – sinking six 3-pointers – as the Warriors prevailed with top scorer Zay Hardwick out with illness.
Western (3-5) attacked from all angles as six players scored six or more points. Chance Sajdak contributed eight, Brayden Hitts and Andy Robbins seven apiece and Jack Gillis six. Western hit 13 3-pointers in the contest, shaking off its loss to Midland Dow one day earlier.
“Every time we made a run, Western hit a big shot,” Standish coach Matt Koin said. “They shot very well.”
Standish (6-3) saw its six-game winning streak come to a halt. After trailing 39-27 at the half, the Panthers outscored Western 41-40 in an evenly matched second half.
Standish put four players in double scoring figures as Karter Fegan tallied 23, Vance Stokoszynski 12, Landon Nixon 11 and Marshall Kridler 10.
